The Effects of Gene Therapy
Many diseases can be easily cured through careful treatment and the use of medicine. Genetic diseases, however, are a different story. They must be treated by replacing the defective gene with the normal gene. This still can't fully cure the disease. Gene therapy relies on carriers to bring the normal gene into the body. This sometimes is unsuccessful, as the body detects it as an intruder to the body, destroying it.
In addition, some families just can't afford the expensive payments for such treatments. This could leave people very poor and in a desperate situation. Also, attempting to change one's genes may contradict one's religion. This may be a bad option for some individuals, as this may have a negative effect on their beliefs. Could all this be worth the cost?
